know it's a bit late to report this, but I thought you might wish to know how I marked St George's Day, via my BBC Regional Radio production "As Time Goes By" (BBC West and SW) on the evening of April 23.
A listener (John English of Tetbury in Glos) had written to me to say "it is such a shame that the English people are not as proud of their patron saint as the Welsh and Scots are of theirs. I wonder why this is? Am I past my sell-by date?"
A transcript of my on-air response is as follows ... "If you're past your sell-by date John, then so am I. And come to that, so are all our fellow English men, women and children who have, in some way, marked today's special significance."
"For me, though, it's not a question of being past our sell-by dates. On the contrary, I am convinced it has more to do with the pervasive nature of political correctness which, in recent years, has encouraged we English people to dwell on the negative aspects of our nationhood at the expense of the positive."
"But even a brief look at England's history and culture, not to mention the achievements of so many great English people over the centuries, shows us that the positive far outweighs the negative."
"Like you John, I am proud to call myself an Englishman and no-one ... not even the PC Thought Police ... can take that away from us ... Happy St George's Day to you sir."
For the record (no pun intended), I then played Vera Lynn's recording of "There'll Always Be An England".

Finally a website that is not concerned with political correctness. Tomorrow wil be a proud day and I will certainly be wearing my England Shirt and flying St Georges flag.
I blame the Labour Goverment for obsessed with political correctness. Nowadays many people are afraid of calling themselves England for fear of being branded a racist whereas they should be proud.

Happy St George's Day. I have upset the US post office by putting an American flag AND my England flag on the mail box. I received a terse, unsigned note telling me to take them down...only 2 car flags!
In this day and age, I was annoyed but did as I was told. Tomorrow the large St George's flag will fly!
Do you sell on E Bay?

I am currently living in Wales so large scale opportunities to celebrate are ruled out but on St George's Day I took a lengthy lunch break at work and got the word "England" tattooed on my right calf in beautiful English script...

The Lincoln Cooke/Connell Charity Fundraisers organise an annual Charity
Ball to raise funds for local and national charities to co-incide with Saint
George's Day. This year our Ball in on 22 April.
Last year we contacted Downing Street to ask if Saint Geoirge's Day (as with
St Patrick, St David and Saint Andrew) could be celebrated with a national
holiday but, although we received replies from No 10, we were informed that
this could not be done!!
Wouldn't it be a good idea?

This St George's Day we are taking to the bars of
London on the patriots pubcrawl 2005.
My assembled patriotic companions and I will be
drinking in a number of bars in London, many of us
dressed as St George, in knights costumes and/or
bearing flags, hats facepaint etc.
Last year was the first year we did this in fancy
dress, and athough only a few of us dressed up we got
a tremendous response from the people of Preston,
where I was living at the time.
People clapped as we walked down the street, crossed
the road to come and shake our hands and approached us
to commend our efforts and even have photographs taken
with us.
This year we have a much larger group (about 15 people
so far) and we are taking it to the capital.
We will be trying to cover as much ground as possible
to make our presence known and hopefully inspire
others to make more of an effort on our national day.
Here's a photograph from last year, I will send you
some from this year next week.

Saturday is St Georges day, we are a an extremely patriotic fringe of ' lads ' from the outskirts of Birmingham whom will be decending on a small suburban ' good ole ' english town which has numerous amounts of traditional ' good ole ' pubs in the area: we will be celebrating in stlye wearing the colours of St George and England. We are a nation of glorious people whom realise our heritage and know how lucky we are to be blessed Englishmen, even if we feel threatened in our own towns and cities with the ever growing influxation of illegal immigrants and the expanding population of many ethnic minorities, soon becoming majorities in some areas, we stay positive. Furthermore, even if this great day ' the 23rd of april ' is not recognised, or in some cases, even mentioned by the so called polititions who have never really performed their job out of desire or patiotism to only take everything for themselves, we still strive, and our faith shall never falter.
"They sell her, and still she never wilts, they rob her, and still she never wilts, they rape her, and still she never wilts.....and still she gives"
(An Englishman on 23rd April 2005)
I dedicate the following question to all the Englishmen who do not know what they are: What do you know of England? Who only England know!
Happy St Georges Day

I am holding my annual black tie dinner for 12 people at my house. This started 5 yrs ago as a rage against the tide of Irishness on st Patricks day
7 courses of English food all with a theme of red and white
All,
Just thought that I would share with you our St.George's Day celebrations.
Twelve English people met in the car park of their local pub (Mansfield
Woodhouse) to meet the mini bus which was to take us into Nottingham City
Centre for our celebrations. There we were all decked out in out National
Flag shirts, shorts, flags and hats looking forward to a great day of
celebrations on our National Day.
Got into Nottingham and headed down to the water front to start our
celebrations with the first drink of the day about 12.30pm. Can I say at
this point that all went silent outside the bar when we walked around the
corner in our full regalia.Dissapointing turnout was very noticable which I
have to add changed very little for the rest of the day.
What a poor turnout on the National Day of English people. We had some good
comments from the majority of people in Nottingham but needless to say there
were some negative comments and shall we say some which were rude and
offensive.Especially when you bare in mind that we were a equal mix of male
and female who were not interested in anyway of causing trouble but were out
to celebrate our great day.
Worst was still to come when a certain pub (Pitcher and Piano) refused us
entry to their establishment, due to the fact as they put it as we were
wearing football shirts (no one in our group was actually wearing any
football shirts). When we tried to talk to them and explain that we were
actually wearing the flags of our country they said tough you still are not
coming in. What an awful shame when in our country you are not allowed into
certain establishments due to the fact that you are very proud to wear the
flag of your country.
We did meet a couple of really good guys who had paraded that morning from
the Pheasant Inn at Radford into the city, this apparently was through the
Royal Society of St George.I only wish that this had been better publicised
as we would have loved to taken part.
All that aside our party had a great day of celebrating that finished back
in our local pub with a pint or two of good old Bombadier.
Just to add to all people who did celebrate our day, Happy St Georges Day to
all and we will see you again next year. In the meantime guys keep up the
great work.
Yours faithfully,
Gary Pearson, English and Proud
I regret that i have only just been made aware of this website by a link on the CEP site. But i did celebrate St. Georges day. I work at the Wimpy in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, and requested from the franchise owner and the manager, that we invest in some St. Georges day merchandise to celebrate. Both of them laughed (literally) saying that it would be a waste of money and drive away some valuable customers.
I myself went to a shop and bought just £10.00 worth of flags and balloons as well as bringing in my own St.Georges flag. The morning of St. Georges day my manager said that seeing as it was my money, there was no reason why i couldnt put them up. the resteraunt looked spectacular with white and red. it brought in many customers who claimed it was fantastic to see people taking an interest in St. Georges day.

I just wanted to say thanks for putting such a great site together. I emigrated from England 2 years ago, but I am very proud to be English, maybe more so now that I have left and realise how great it is.
I have just spent 2 hours reading through the site and am very proud. Thank you
Happy St George's Day! I will be celebrating from 3000 miles away.
