Tower Hamlets council in east London have this year come
up with the novel idea of hosting a Guy Fawkes night…without
a Guy Fawkes. The powers that be have instead decided to
give this traditional English celebration a Bengali theme
with a 12ft long mechanical Bengal tiger. How very trendy!
I may be pointing out the obvious here but the glaring flaw
in their plan is that the 5th November is actually Guy Fawkes
night or Bonfire night. I can’t remember anything
Bengali ever popping up in the equation.
Next Ramadan they’ve got ambitious plans for cheese
rolling, morris dancing, real ale and a pub-crawl culminating
in the chaining of the local imam naked to a lamppost on
the high street. I think not…TC
