While raiding a home in Leicester, following a double
shooting in Birmingham, police were faced by an angry crowd of around
100 chanting "Allah-hu-Akbar" (God is great). Six men were arrested
over the shooting which according to an Eastern Eye source was prompted
by rivalry between the followers of different Imams. Manzoor Moghul, Chairman
of the Leicester Federation of Muslim Organisations, said: “This
is a Muslim area and there is a lot of resentment about the war with Iraq.
There are a lot of sensitivities.”
Editor's comment: Mr
Moghul’s statement is worrying. His attitude, and indeed, the whole
incident, is more reminiscent of Ulster in the 70’s and 80’s
than the English Midlands in the early 21st century. Among the things
that have made England such a magnet for people from across the world
is the rule of law. Racial, cultural, religious and political “sensitivities”
must not be used as excuses to establish no-go areas for the authorities.
