Nigel Rees wrote about the phenomenal worldwide use of
the English language, and the positive and negative effects of this. Rees
explains the historical events that have led to the massive use of English
across the globe. He points out that most English speakers across the
world speak it as a second language and that they adapt it to their own
needs and tastes.
Editor's comment: The
success of English is something that the people of England can be proud.
One thing that Mr Rees does not examine, however, is the English people’s
loss of ownership of their own language that its success entails. Unlike
the Scots, Welsh and Irish, the English have no language they can call
their very own.
