february 19th 2002 - widely reported

Five market traders had their convictions, for selling food in traditional imperial weights instead of metric, upheld by the courts.

Editor's comment: This just goes to show that we are no longer a sovereign nation in charge of our own affairs. The men were convicted using regulations brought in by Brussels, without OUR elected MP's consent, that overrule the Weights and Measures law passed by OUR Parliament. At least if we are not happy with our MP's we have a chance to vote them off. Who in the European Union is responsible for these regulations? I don't know. You don't know; so what business have they in telling us how to sell our food. Every year thousands of these laws and regulations are brought in from Brussels without our consent which means in the very least that you can now be criminalized for thousands of things which before were perfectly legal and harmless. Another point; it takes thousands and thousands of pounds of tax payers money to take these people to court when these jumped up jobworths have absolutely no mandate from the English people to do so. Does it really matter?.
